Trump Pledges Push for Ukraine Peace at G7 Summit

At the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, US President Donald Trump said Russia should reach a peace agreement with Ukraine and pledged to do everything in his power to help end the war, which has now lasted more than four years.

Following talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and G7 leaders, Trump described the discussions as very successful and announced further bilateral meetings with the Ukrainian leader.

At the summit, Ukraine and its European allies sought to persuade Trump that battlefield developments had shifted in Kyiv's favor and that Moscow was facing greater pressure than in previous months. Zelensky stressed the need to strengthen air defenses and intensify diplomatic efforts to compel Russia to end the war.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said signs of strain within Russia were becoming increasingly visible and argued that the time had come to increase support for Ukraine.

The Middle East was also high on the summit agenda. European leaders discussed Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz with Trump. France, Britain and Germany are seeking a greater role in future negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, amid concerns that a preliminary agreement may not adequately address Tehran's nuclear and missile capabilities.
