Last week, after a meeting with Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog, he spoke of the “tragic situation in Gaza.” According to the pope, the latest attack targeted Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, who lives in exile, further exacerbating tensions.

Leo also appealed for the need to maintain peace and said he was trying to contact the Catholic priest in Gaza, Gabriel Romanelli.
