Merz: Germany needs a secret service that matches its strength

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has emphasized that the security situation in the country is more serious than it has been since the end of World War II.

At the inauguration of Martin Jaeger as the new president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND), Merz called for the service to be strengthened in order to counter growing hybrid threats.

Europe is in a phase in which the long-standing foundations of peace and stability are being shaken, Merz said.

Germany must therefore act in accordance with its size and economic strength.

According to security authorities, the greatest dangers include acts of sabotage, espionage, and disinformation campaigns—especially from Russia.

Jaeger, previously German ambassador to Ukraine, succeeds long-time BND chief Bruno Kahl.

Merz emphasized that in times of growing tensions, Germany needs an efficient and technologically advanced intelligence service—both civilian and military—to secure early information and advantages in the geopolitical environment.
