Taliban releases British couple who worked in Afghan schools
British couple Barbie and Peter Reynolds, who were arrested by the Taliban in Afghanistan in February, have been released after eight months thanks to Qatar's mediation.
They were held separately during their detention, and their family feared for their health.
According to Reuters, they were arrested along with a Chinese-American friend and a local interpreter, allegedly for using an aircraft without prior notification to the authorities.
Qatar provided medical care and contact with their family during their detention.
The Reynolds had been living in Afghanistan for 18 years, working on school projects, and decided to remain in the country even after the Taliban took power.
Their release comes at a time when the West is warning its citizens against traveling to Afghanistan, where they risk arrest.
Qatar is continuing its efforts to secure the release of foreigners – this year alone, it has helped three Americans.
