Peskov threatens US with countermeasures if New START fails

The Kremlin warned that the expiration of the New START treaty limiting nuclear weapons between Russia and the US next February would pose a serious risk to international security.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia would take unspecified measures if the United States did not agree to a one-year extension of the treaty, which President Vladimir Putin proposed on Monday.

The New START treaty is a key nuclear arms control agreement between the world's two largest nuclear powers, and its continuation is considered crucial for global stability and security.

Tensions surrounding the agreement are mounting as accompanying talks have so far failed to produce an agreement on an extension.
