Germany welcomes Trump's U-turn and calls for more intensive discussion on sanctions

The German government has welcomed the remarks made by US President Donald Trump, who surprisingly declared on Tuesday that Ukraine could regain all territories occupied by Russia. According to government spokespeople, this represents a significant change in rhetoric that is in line with Berlin's political goals.

“The tone of these statements is in line with our efforts to maintain and increase pressure on Russia, the aggressor,” a government spokesperson said on Wednesday.

He added that German diplomats have been pushing for months for sanctions against Moscow to remain unchanged and, if necessary, to be tightened.
