Von der Leyen: The doors to the Union are open for Moldova
On Monday, the European Union welcomed the results of the parliamentary elections in Moldova. According to EU representatives, the country has shown that, even though it is small and belongs to Eastern Europe, it is firmly on the path to EU membership.
“The Moldovan people have spoken, and their message is loud and clear,” wrote António Costa, President of the European Council. “They have chosen democracy, reform, and a European future—despite pressure and interference from Russia.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Moldova had clearly voted for Europe, democracy, and freedom. “Our doors are open. And we will stand by your side—every step of the way,” she added.
President Maia Sandu's Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) won Sunday's parliamentary election with more than 50.1 percent of the vote and will hold 55 seats in the 101-member parliament. It therefore does not need to form a coalition.
Maintaining a parliamentary majority will enable it to continue the process of joining the EU, which will, however, require years of legislative reform.
