The European Commission has proposed four flagship projects for the development of EU defense
The European Commission has proposed four “flagship projects” in the defense sector to strengthen the EU's strategic capabilities in a changing global security environment.
The projects include a European drone defense system, a program to monitor the eastern border, an air defense shield, and a space defense shield.
These projects are part of the European Commission's strategy to improve Europe's defense capabilities and technological sovereignty.
The Commission plans to simplify and speed up approval procedures to enable faster and more efficient investment in military capabilities, which are essential in light of the ongoing threats in the security environment.
The European drone defense system is designed to protect airspace from drones. The eastern border surveillance program aims to improve surveillance and response capabilities along the EU's eastern border. The air defense shield will establish an integrated system to protect against missiles and aircraft.
The space shield, in turn, will focus on protecting Europe's satellites and space infrastructure from cyber-physical attacks.
These projects are designed as large-scale and costly initiatives that would require the cooperation of several member states and planned joint investments within the EU budget framework until 2034.
