Trump supports Putin's proposal to limit nuclear weapons

US President Donald Trump has agreed to Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal for voluntary nuclear arms limits.

In September, Putin proposed that Russia would continue to comply with the limits set out in the New START treaty even after it expires, if the US did the same.

Trump said the plan “sounds like a good idea.” The treaty, signed in 2010, limits the number of nuclear warheads to 1,550 and is the last agreement between the major nuclear powers.

However, it expires in February 2026, with Russia willing to extend it for one year if the US does the same. Putin said he was ready to extend it if both partners agreed.

The Russian president warned that the US would destroy Russia's relations with Washington if it supplied Ukraine with Tomahawk medium- to long-range missiles.
