Estonia has closed its border crossing with Russia due to military activities
Estonia closed the Saatse border crossing with Russia on Friday evening after Estonian border police registered unusually heavy movements of Russian military units in the border area.
According to the portal Jevropejska pravda, operations manager Künter Pedoski said this was a preventive measure to avoid possible provocations.
The patrols initially advised drivers to avoid the area, but some attempted to continue their journey—which, however, leads through Russian territory.
Just a few weeks ago, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace. According to diplomatic sources, NATO threatened to punish similar violations with shoot-downs.
At the same time, the European Parliament passed a resolution recommending that member states take tougher action against border violations.
Estonia expects further provocations from Russia.
