Head of German intelligence: Russia could attack NATO before 2029
The head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) stated on Monday that Russia would not shy away from a military attack on a NATO member state.
Martin Jäger said at a parliamentary hearing of leading intelligence officials that Russia's goal was to intimidate Europe into paralysis and surrender.
He added that no one should rely on predictions that Russia would not be in a position to attack NATO until 2029—such a move could happen sooner.
In recent months, not only German but also British intelligence services have been issuing increasing warnings about hybrid operations, cyberattacks, and attempts by the Kremlin to influence public opinion in EU countries.
Recently, the Czech Republic also proposed restrictions on the freedom of movement of Russian diplomats.
The proposal is a response to fears of sabotage and espionage. The Russian Foreign Ministry has so far described the information as unofficial, but has threatened retaliatory measures should it be implemented.
