Poland accuses Ukrainian of espionage – he is alleged to have shared information about critical infrastructure
One of two Ukrainians arrested for drug possession shared photos and coordinates of critical Polish military infrastructure with a Russian-speaking individual, Polish prosecutors said Wednesday.
Poland says it has been targeted by tactics such as arson and cyberattacks as part of a “hybrid war” waged by Russia to destabilize countries that support Kyiv in Russia's war against Ukraine. Moscow rejects such accusations.
The two Ukrainians, identified only as Bohdan K. and Kyrylo T., were arrested in the eastern Polish town of Biała Podlaska for possession of 30 grams of illegal drugs.
“Correspondence was discovered on the seized phone belonging to Bohdan K. showing that he sent photos and geographical coordinates of critical infrastructure used by the armed forces of the Republic of Poland to a Russian-speaking person,” prosecutors said.
The man was accused of working for a foreign intelligence service and passing on information that could harm the security of the state. The court ordered him to be held in custody for three months while the investigation continues. “The accused does not feel guilty, expressed pro-Russian views and questioned the sovereignty of Ukraine,” the statement said.
Kyrylo T. was charged with possession of illegal drugs and released.
