Kyiv Hit by Massive Overnight Missile and Drone Attack
Ukraine's capital Kyiv was struck by a large wave of missiles and drones in the early hours of Sunday. Explosions reverberated through the city shortly after 1 a.m. local time.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that one person was killed after a nine-story apartment block in the city's central Shevchenkivskyi district was hit. Several people remained trapped in a bomb shelter at a school in the same district after debris blocked its entrance. The head of the city's military administration said other people were believed to be trapped in a shelter at a shopping center in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
The city's military administration reported 20 people injured in the attack. A further three were wounded in the wider Kyiv region, according to Governor Mykola Kalashnyk.
President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Saturday that Russia was preparing an attack using the Oreshnik missile, citing intelligence from Ukraine, the United States and Europe. The Ukrainian air force did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the missile had been used. Zelensky's warning came after Vladimir Putin ordered his military to prepare options to retaliate against Ukraine for a drone strike on a student dormitory in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian military said it had targeted a Russian drone command post.
