Netanyahu Seeks Free Hand in Lebanon as Iran Deal Takes Shape

Negotiations between the United States and Iran over a possible peace deal have moved forward significantly, US President Donald Trump said. After a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump assessed that Washington and Tehran have already "largely negotiated" a memorandum of understanding that could lead to the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to an Israeli source, Netanyahu stressed during the call that Israel must retain the freedom to act against security threats in all areas, including Lebanon, and Trump was expected to endorse this position. Israel also insists that any final agreement must include the dismantling of Iran's nuclear program and the removal of enriched uranium from Iranian territory.

Iran's Fars news agency reported that the draft agreement includes a commitment by the US and its allies not to attack Iran or its allies, with Tehran pledging in return not to carry out pre-emptive attacks.

The possible diplomatic breakthrough is nonetheless raising concerns in Israel. Prominent politician Benny Gantz described the possible acceptance of a ceasefire in Lebanon as part of a broader deal with Iran as a strategic mistake. Israeli sources say negotiations are continuing in close coordination between Washington and Tel Aviv.

Trump wrote on Truth Social after the call that the conversation with Netanyahu had gone "very well".
