Vance Says US and Israeli Interests Can Diverge on Iran
In an interview with Fox News, US Vice President JD Vance said that while the United States and Israel shared many common interests, Washington’s policy would be guided by what President Donald Trump considered best for the US.
Vance was responding to reports of tensions between the Trump administration and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly over Israeli missile strikes on Iran and Netanyahu’s preference for a more hard-line approach. Vance said the main objective of the United States was to ensure that Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon.
“The Israelis and the United States, we have a lot of shared interests”, Vance told Jesse Watters. He added, however, that their interests could diverge and that Washington’s main objective in Iran was to ensure that Tehran does not acquire a nuclear weapon.
“Over the last year and a half, we’ve created the space necessary where the president believes – and I think he’s right – that we can get a long-term settlement to Iran’s nuclear issue”, Vance said.
“Now, Israel may like that, they may not like that, but fundamentally, we think this is in the best interest of the United States of America”, he added.
