EU Relief Adds €1bn to German Costs
The German government may have to spend around €1 billion more to support industry after the European Commission approved broader electricity price relief measures.
Economy Minister Katherina Reiche announced that, from 2026, businesses will be able to benefit simultaneously from the new subsidized industrial electricity price and the existing system of energy cost compensation and carbon charge relief.
According to Berlin, the move is necessary because German industry continues to face pressure from high energy costs.
Energy-intensive companies are confronting rising expenses, particularly after tensions in the Middle East intensified and pushed global energy prices higher once again. However, Brussels’ decision also complicates the government’s budget planning.
The additional spending comes ahead of preparations for the 2027 budget. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil is already under pressure to close existing funding gaps.
