India increases drug exports to Russia and Brazil
India plans to increase its pharmaceutical exports to Russia, Brazil, and the Netherlands in order to reduce its dependence on the US market.
This has been reported by two industry sources familiar with the matter.
Although Indian pharmaceutical companies are currently exempt from the up to 50 percent US tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, there is uncertainty in the industry.
The US is the most important market for Indian drugs, accounting for around one-third of India's total exports, especially for low-cost generics.
In fiscal year 2025, exports to the US amounted to around $10.5 billion.
“India wants to expand its presence in other markets, particularly in Russia, Brazil, and parts of Europe,” said one of the sources.
This is not about replacement, but about additional markets. With the existing production volume, export growth of up to 20 percent is possible, it continues.
However, regulatory hurdles are causing problems and will be discussed with global regulatory officials at the upcoming International Pharmaceutical Exhibition in New Delhi.
