Geneva as a venue for Ukraine talks? Merz makes a proposal

On Tuesday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed using Geneva as the venue for possible ceasefire talks between Ukraine and Russia.

“Geneva would be a suitable place for a ceasefire agreement,” Merz said at a press conference with Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter in Berlin.

On Thursday, Merz plans to propose once again at the meeting of the so-called “coalition of the willing” that an invitation be extended to Geneva. The coalition, which was launched by France and the UK, has been working for months on a plan for countries to offer Ukraine long-term security guarantees once a peace agreement is reached.

France is hosting a predominantly virtual meeting on Thursday to coordinate recent efforts to support Ukraine's security and condemn Russia's unwillingness to negotiate.
