Tusk: Resistance cannot stop Mercosur agreement

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in Warsaw on September 3 that European countries opposed to the trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the South American economic alliance Mercosur would no longer be able to prevent its adoption.

Mercosur was founded in 1991 with the aim of promoting free trade. The agreement would give the EU access to a market of more than 220 million people.
Tusk believes that the agreement will ultimately be adopted despite opposition from some member states.

However, the critical countries are working intensively on solutions, as they fear that such an agreement could affect the competitiveness of their own food or industrial production.

Tusk emphasized that, in the event of negative effects, the European Commission would immediately introduce protective mechanisms to benefit the domestic market—for example, by reintroducing customs measures.
