A famous cable car has derailed in Portugal. There are already fifteen victims

At least 15 people have died and an estimated 18 have been injured after the Gloria cable car, popular with tourists, derailed and crashed in Lisbon on Wednesday, according to a spokesperson for the emergency services quoted by Reuters.

Authorities have not released the identities or nationalities of the victims, but they said that some foreigners were among the dead.

“It's a tragic day for our city. … Lisbon is in mourning, it's a tragic, tragic event,” said Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas.

Footage from the scene showed a wrecked yellow cable car, which, similar to a tram, transports people up and down the steep slope in the Portuguese capital, as well as rescue workers recovering people from the wreckage.

In his statement, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his regret over the tragic accident and expressed hope that the authorities would soon be able to determine the cause of the accident. This is not yet known.

Opened in 1885, the line connects the center of Lisbon near Restauradores Square with the Bairro Alto district, which is known for its lively nightlife.
