Gen Z protests in Nepal – police crack down on demonstrators

Massive protests have broken out in Nepal's capital, killing at least 14 people and injuring more than 50, according to state television.

Thousands of young people demonstrated against the government's ban on social networks and ongoing corruption.

Some breaches of the security barriers in front of the parliament led to attacks on security forces and the arson of an ambulance.

The police used tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannons; the army was also mobilized to provide support.

Eyewitnesses report disproportionate use of force.

The government defends the blockade of the platforms as a measure against hate speech and fraud.

The younger generation, on the other hand, sees this as a massive encroachment on freedom.

The protests have now spread to other cities and are often referred to as “Gen Z demonstrations.”
