US and EU discuss tougher sanctions against Russia

The EU Special Envoy for Sanctions, David O'Sullivan, met with US partners in Washington to discuss possible tightening of measures against Russia.

The focus was on the next steps for both sides in view of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump had indicated over the weekend that he was ready for a “second phase” of sanctions – the most significant change of course since the beginning of the conflict.

EU Council President António Costa confirmed that new measures are being prepared in close coordination with Washington.

The European Union is currently working on its 19th package of sanctions, which will target Russian banks, ships in the so-called shadow fleet, and Chinese companies suspected of circumventing sanctions.

The G7 countries are also planning to lower the price cap on Russian oil – so far without the participation of the US.

However, Trump increased tariffs on imports from India, partly because of its continued purchases of Russian oil.

The Kremlin stated that no sanctions could change Russia's course.
