Poland alerts UN Security Council, which convenes special session on drones

A special session of the UN Security Council began at 9 p.m. our time in New York. The reason for this is Russian drones that entered Polish airspace during a large-scale Russian air strike on western Ukraine on Wednesday night.

Polish radar systems detected several dozen objects in their airspace. Some of them were shot down as potential threats. Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty (enhanced consultations among Alliance countries) was also activated as a result of the incident.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed on Friday that an “Eastern Watch” mission will be deployed to strengthen the defense of Europe's eastern flank. He added that Russia's recklessness in the air is becoming increasingly frequent.

The mission will begin on Friday evening and will involve a range of assets from allies including Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and others.
