Euractiv: Europe's socialists to expel Smer at October congress

The Party of European Socialists (PES) will finally expel the Slovakian party Smer at its congress in Amsterdam next month.

According to the Euractiv portal, this step comes one year after the party's membership in the alliance was suspended due to its entry into a coalition with the SNS.

Several sources cited by the portal state that the socialist family has lost patience with Robert Fico's pro-Russian and pro-Chinese policies, attacks on the media, and the dismantling of institutions in Slovakia.

The Hlas party is also currently suspended, but is not expected to be permanently expelled.

The Socialists had already taken a similar step in 2023 when Georgia was stripped of its observer status because of its pro-Russian course.
