US approves first arms deliveries to Ukraine, financed by allies
The United States has approved the first military aid shipments to Ukraine under a new mechanism financed by allies, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi confirmed.
According to Reuters sources, Deputy Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby approved two arms shipments worth $1 billion, to be selected based on Ukraine's list of priorities.
This is the first use of this new model, which allows NATO member states to finance deliveries from US stocks. According to reports, these are expected to include primarily air defense systems.
The new financing mechanism is intended to significantly strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities in the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which has been going on for more than three years.
The deliveries are part of a comprehensive military aid package worth up to $10 billion, which is intended to help Ukraine maintain stability on the front lines.
