Germany prepares for a thousand casualties per day in the event of war with Russia
The German army is preparing for the possibility that, in the event of a major conflict between NATO and Russia, it will have to treat up to a thousand wounded soldiers every day.
According to Surgeon General Ralf Hoffmann, this number would depend on the intensity of the fighting and the units involved. He points out that the nature of injuries has changed significantly since the start of the war in Ukraine – from gunshot wounds to burns and injuries caused by drones.
The situation on the front line, where drones dominate the so-called “death zones,” makes it difficult to evacuate the wounded, which is why stabilizing them directly on site is crucial. Germany is therefore considering the use of hospital trains, buses, and air rescue.
After evacuation, care would primarily be transferred to civilian hospitals, which would need to free up around 15,000 beds. The current German medical units, with 15,000 members, would be increased if necessary.
The planning is taking place against the backdrop of warnings from NATO that Russia could launch an attack as early as 2029 – however, Moscow rejects these claims.
