Politicians support recognition of a Palestinian state at the UN
Dozens of world leaders have openly spoken out in favor of recognizing Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly.
Other countries have joined the UK, Canada, France, Australia, and Belgium. French President Emmanuel Macron announced the opening of a Palestinian embassy in exchange for reforms and the release of hostages.
The majority of Security Council members also support recognition, but Germany and Italy remain skeptical, stating that recognition must come at the end of a political process.
Israel and the US criticize this diplomatic move as a dangerous reward for Hamas and warn of destabilization in the region. Israel even announced possible annexations of parts of the West Bank in response.
According to information from Reuters, around 80% of UN members are already in favor of recognizing Palestine, but the United States is blocking full membership in the world organization.
Governments around the world emphasize the need for a two-state solution for peace in the region—despite the ongoing military conflict and humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
