Zelensky criticized for concentration of power, European diplomats also concerned

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spoken out sharply against domestic critics, including members of his own Servant of the People party, in a closed-door parliamentary session. According to Politico, he is bothered by the fact that media outlets, activists, and politicians are pointing out corruption and abuses in the country, thereby weakening support from Western partners.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukrainians should focus on the war and international aid. Members of parliament had expected him to strike a more conciliatory tone after the summer protests against his attempt to weaken two anti-corruption agencies.

However, several parliamentarians reported growing dissatisfaction within his movement because the president was bypassing parliament and making decisions only with a close circle of advisers.

This reinforced fears of a concentration of power. Some lawmakers accused the president's office of passing on unpopular decisions to them. They said Zelensky was overly sensitive to criticism and was undermining democratic processes with his methods.

European diplomats in Kyiv are now also expressing concerns about these trends behind closed doors.
