Aid flotilla for Gaza sets sail from Greece despite Israeli warnings

The international aid flotilla Global Sumud, consisting of around 50 civilian ships, has set sail from the Greek coast towards the Gaza Strip – despite Israeli warnings that it would block access. Among the passengers are lawyers, activists, and the well-known climate activist Greta Thunberg.

At the beginning of the week, the fleet was attacked by drones in international waters, about 56 kilometers off the Greek island of Gavdos, but no one was injured. In response, Italy and Spain sent warships to protect their citizens on board the fleet.

The Greek government is ensuring safe passage for the ships in its territorial waters, but has not yet considered providing a naval escort. The organizers plan to arrive in Gaza early next week.

Israel has described the flotilla as supporters of Hamas and threatened a blockade. Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called the members of the flotilla “terrorists” and announced tough measures.

The Italian authorities warned the Italian participants of the risks of continuing the mission and offered assistance in repatriating them. The warship is conducting exclusively humanitarian and rescue operations and will not intervene against anyone at sea.
