Without an extension of tax breaks, four million Americans would lose their health insurance
President Donald Trump announced in October 2025 that he wanted to amend the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare.
This 2014 law created insurance markets where about one in seven Americans purchase their health insurance. Trump acknowledged that tax credits that significantly reduce the cost of health insurance for millions of people need to be extended. The problem, however, is that they are set to expire on the last day of 2025.
A poll for NBC News found that most Donald Trump supporters agree with extending these subsidies, which are a major sticking point in resolving the government shutdown.
It is estimated that without an extension of the tax breaks, about four million people would lose their Obamacare coverage, and average insurance premiums could more than double by 2026.
The Trump administration is also pushing for changes to the income verification process for insured individuals, which could cost some their eligibility for assistance.
