Kremlin welcomes Trump's response to the New START treaty

The Kremlin has praised US President Donald Trump's statement supporting Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to maintain the restrictions on nuclear weapons under the New START treaty for another year.

This treaty, the last of its kind between Russia and the US, expires in February 2026. Putin had already presented his proposal in September, but Trump has only now commented on it, saying it sounds “like a good idea.”

Moscow sees this signal as positive and believes it could be a step toward restoring trust and cooperation. According to the Kremlin, the US could support the Russian president's initiative in this way.

Russia and the US together possess almost 90 percent of all nuclear warheads worldwide, which underscores the importance of this issue.

The nuclear balance between the two countries is crucial not only for bilateral relations but also for global security.
