The Nobel Prize in Literature goes to Hungary: Award for László Krasznahorkai

Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy praised his work as “visionary and powerful, highlighting the power of art even in the shadow of apocalyptic themes.”

The prize is endowed with 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately one million euros). Krasznahorkai thus joins the ranks of literary figures such as William Faulkner, Winston Churchill, and Jon Fosse. Last year, the award went to South Korean author Han Kang.

The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded since 1901 and continues to provoke controversial reactions. For example, the awards to Bob Dylan in 2016 and Peter Handke, who attended the funeral of Slobodan Milošević, sparked debate.

The Academy has also been criticized for ignoring greats such as Tolstoy and Joyce.
