The Taliban want to raise their flag at the Afghan embassy in Berlin
The Taliban have asked Germany to allow them to fly their white flag with black lettering—the Islamic creed—above the Afghan embassy in Berlin. At the same time, the regime is demanding that the embassy be renamed from “Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan” to “Embassy of Afghanistan,” reports the daily newspaper The Telegraph.
The demands were made during negotiations on the July agreement, which allows for the deportation of dozens of Afghans, including violent criminals. However, this move has put the German government in a delicate position – a rejection could jeopardize the deportation agreement, but approval would cause a scandal.
Veterans of the German Armed Forces and the right-wing AfD, which sees this as a “normalization of radical Islam,” have spoken out sharply against the proposal.
The Greens also joined in the criticism, accusing the government of “secret negotiations with terrorists.” The Foreign Ministry responded by stating that Germany would retain the symbols of the former Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
