The European Commission wants to expand the drone wall to protect the entire continent
The European Commission has proposed extending the so-called “drone wall” initiative from the eastern border to protect the entire continent. This proposal, now known as the “European Drone Defense Initiative,” is to become part of the planned “defense readiness map” that the Commission will present on Thursday.
The project was conceived after around 20 Russian drones entered the airspace of Poland, a member state of the European Union and NATO, at the end of September. The solution envisages the establishment of a network of sensors, electronic jamming systems, and countermeasures against drones, stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.
While Eastern European countries welcomed the proposal, some southern and western states pointed out that the threat posed by drones also affects their regions. European Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius hinted at an expansion of this initiative and gave it a new name during a defense forum in Brussels.
The aim is to protect the entire European area against drones in a coordinated manner and to strengthen European defense capabilities.
