EU Commission: Ukraine and Moldova are making progress on their path to the European Union

In its annual report, the European Commission stated that Moldova, Ukraine, Albania, and Montenegro have made progress in the process of joining the European Union, Euronews reports.

Ukraine in particular has made significant progress in the areas of the rule of law and public administration reform. However, the Commission emphasized the need to step up the fight against corruption, in particular by protecting the independence of anti-corruption authorities.

According to the report, Moldova has completed the screening process and the accession negotiations phase is currently being prepared, with the aim of completing them by 2028. The Commission stressed that Moldova must increase the pace of reform in order to achieve this goal.

In contrast, the Commission identified “challenges” in Serbia with regard to the independence of the judiciary, freedom of the press, and the transparency of elections. According to Brussels, Georgia has seen a decline in democratic standards, and the Commission called for a reversal of this trend.
