Ukraine's elite unit suspected in Nord Stream blast, investigation says

An investigation by German authorities has revealed new circumstances surrounding the 2022 destruction of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines. According to the Wall Street Journal, investigators have " obtained a clear picture of how an elite Ukrainian military unit carried out the attack under the direct supervision of then-commander-in-chief Valery Zaluzhny."

Investigators pieced together clues and information from yacht charters, telephones and license plates, allowing them to issue arrest warrants for three members of the special unit and four divers.

Germany has requested the extradition of the group's commander, Sergei Kuznetsov, from Italy, and another suspect from Poland, but Warsaw has refused the request. The Wall Street Journal warns that the legal action could significantly weaken the unity of European support for Ukraine.
