Kyiv Post:US wants to omit "aggression" and "territorial integrity" from UN resolution on Ukraine

Unexpectedly, US President Donald Trump's administration at the UN has come out in favour of removing language from the annual Ukraine resolution that affirms Ukraine's territorial integrity and condemns Russia's occupation of Crimea.

Two diplomatic sources noted to the Kyiv Post that the US is pushing for a new format for the text, titled "war in Ukraine," that would omit key terms such as "aggression" or "territorial integrity."

The shift has raised concerns among European partners, who warn that it would weaken the UN's traditionally strong stance on the Russian invasion. Meanwhile, the current version of the resolution is both an important tool of diplomacy for Ukraine and a legal basis for future accountability mechanisms against Russia, such as before the International Criminal Court.

Although the United States voted in favour of the document along with 77 other countries as recently as last year, the current negotiations indicate a change of course. The UN Third Committee will decide on the resolution in the coming weeks.

According to the above-quoted portal, European diplomats are trying to persuade the US to reconsider its position before the vote and to maintain continuity with its previous support for Ukraine.
