Pentagon plans massive base near Gaza for tens of thousands
The US military is considering building a large temporary base near Gaza that could accommodate up to ten thousand people. The aim is to promote a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas through an international stabilisation force.
According to a leaked document, the U.S. Navy is asking selected contractors for cost estimates for a comprehensive solution, including housing, supplies, security and infrastructure, Bloomberg reports.
The White House has not yet formally approved the project, noting that it is only an internal preparatory phase. Nevertheless, Israeli sources confirm that preliminary plans exist.
The US is seeking international support for the deployment of these forces to coordinate with Israel and Egypt. A similar procurement process has been used in the past, for example in the construction of detention camps for migrants.
In the case of Gaza, it is intended to be a step towards restoring order after years of conflict.
