Trump calls for clemency for Netanyahu, sends letter to Israel's president
US President Donald Trump made an unusual request to Israeli President Isaac Herzog. In a public letter, he urged him to consider pardoning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to Trump, the Israeli prime minister is facing politically motivated prosecution, which he considers unjustified. In a letter published by Herzog's office, the US president says that, while he respects the independence of the Israeli judiciary, he sees Netanyahu's case as part of an unfair political fight.
He also stressed the long-standing alliance with the Israeli leader, particularly on issues of the fight against Iran.
Herzog has not yet publicly commented on the request.
