UN approves Trump's Gaza plan, paving the way for international forces

The United Nations Security Council on Monday approved a resolution authored by the United States that gives the green light to President Donald Trump's plan to end the war in Gaza and authorises the creation of an international stabilisation force.

The resolution also legitimises the creation of a transitional governing body - the Peace Committee - to oversee the reconstruction and economic revitalisation of Gaza.

The stabilisation force has been mandated to ensure the process of demilitarisation of the territory, including the destruction of weapons and military infrastructure. Hamas has firmly rejected the decision and reiterated that it will not give up armed resistance.

Russia and China expressed reservations, but abstained, thus allowing the resolution to be adopted. The Palestinian Authority supported the document and declared its willingness to participate in its implementation.

Mr Trump described the outcome as a "historic moment". The resolution also included a hint of a future path towards Palestinian statehood, which has provoked critical reactions in Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated Israel's rejection of a Palestinian state and insisted it would demilitarize Gaza "the easy way or the hard way."
