Russian expert: Artificial intelligence is like the world's new nuclear project

Russian technology manager Alexander Vedyakhin of Sberbank compared artificial intelligence with nuclear technology. At the global level, he said, a new "nuclear club" is forming, where influence is decided by whether or not a country has its own AI.

"AI is like a nuclear project. Either you have your own national language model or you don't," Vedyakhin said at the Moscow AI Journey conference.

Russia needs to develop at least two to three original models for use in sensitive areas such as public services, healthcare and education, he said. He stressed that classified data must not be stored in foreign systems.

In his speech, he stressed that the United States and China are about six to nine months ahead of Russia and that membership in this world club is "practically decided".
