U.S. suspends all migration applications of Afghans
The United States has indefinitely halted the processing of all immigration applications involving Afghan nationals following an attack near the White House in which two National Guardsmen were seriously injured.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that the suspension applies to all types of Afghan-related filings pending a review of security and screening mechanisms.
The action follows President Donald Trump's call for the government to rescreen Afghans who came to the U.S. during the Joe Biden administration.
Trump described the shooting at the White House as an "act of terror" and said the suspect came from Afghanistan in 2021. According to US media, he is a 29-year-old Afghan who entered the US in 2021 and later received asylum. USCIS stressed in a statement that "protecting the homeland and the American people" remains its primary mission.
