Politico: Without a peace agreement, the US will not provide security guarantees to Ukraine
According to Politico, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told European allies that Washington wants a peace deal first, and only then is it ready to talk about security guarantees for Ukraine.
This condition, according to European diplomats, was a key part of the proposals the US sent to Kiev last week. Rubio stressed in a phone call that long-term guarantees would be directly negotiated by President Donald Trump, but "only later," after the deal.
Kiev, however, considers Western security guarantees to be the basis of any deal with Russia. The White House assures that any final plan will include full guarantees for Ukraine.
Trump has said he will not invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House until a deal is signed.
