Ukraine develops its own AI model to replace foreign systems
Ukraine is developing its own Large Language Model (LLM), based on Google's open platform Gemma. It is intended to replace foreign AI systems to give the country independence in their use in both military and civilian spheres.
Initial training will be carried out on Google's infrastructure, but then the entire project will be moved to Ukrainian data centres so that Ukraine has full control over the systems, which are used by 23 million people every day.
Operator Kyivstar says the new model will be the basis for the next generation of AI-powered services. According to the ministry, having its own system would save millions of dollars while avoiding dependence on foreign solutions such as ChatGPT.
Ukraine has also rejected Chinese models, as it plans to deploy AI in the military's battlefield management or adversary monitoring systems. AI is already assisting in analyzing Russian attacks and in demining.
The model is also supposed to support minority languages and regional dialects, which today's AIs have problems with. They collect data from more than 90 state institutions. Training of the model is running on secure GPUs abroad, and the team expects cyberattacks once it is up and running. The system will first be used by the government and Kyivstar, and later by private companies.
