Trump warns Iran: If you kill protesters, US will intervene

US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States will intervene if Iran uses violence against peaceful protesters. In a statement on Truth Social, he said the US is prepared to act if protesters are shot or killed.

His words come at a time when Iran is reeling from its biggest protests in three years. They have erupted over worsening economic conditions and escalated into violent clashes with security forces.

Tensions have escalated after traders across the country expressed discontent at the sharp devaluation of the currency and rising prices.

Complicating the situation is the long-term pressure on the Iranian economy, which has deepened following the renewal of US sanctions in 2018. It was Trump who reintroduced these following the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

The protests have since spread to several provinces and, according to local sources, have also caused casualties.
