Iran and Russia both accuse the US of armed aggression against Venezuela
Russia expressed deep concern and condemned the "act of armed aggression" against Venezuela committed by the United States, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday. "In the current situation, it is important to prevent further escalation and focus on finding a way out of the situation through dialogue."
The US military attack was also condemned by Iran, which is an ally of Venezuela. According to the country, it is a "flagrant violation of Venezuela's national sovereignty and territorial integrity".
The Iranian Foreign Ministry called on the UN Security Council to 'act immediately to stop the illegal aggression' and to hold those responsible to account. Colombia has also called for a meeting of the United Nations and the Organization of American States.
"The United States has successfully carried out a large-scale attack against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolás Maduro, who was captured with his wife and airlifted out of the country," US President Donald Trump reported in a post on Truth Social.
The US has accused Maduro of running a "narco-state" and rigging last year's elections, which the opposition said it overwhelmingly won. The Venezuelan leader has long repeated that Washington wants to take control of Venezuela's oil reserves, which are the largest in the world.
