NYT: US operation in Venezuela claimed dozens of lives

At least 40 deaths have been caused by the US military operation in Venezuela ordered by US President Donald Trump on Saturday night. During the crackdown, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured and taken to the United States.

According to the New York Times, civilians and military personnel are among the victims. The Guardian reports that one of the victims is 80-year-old Rosa González, who was killed when a three-storey apartment block was hit.

President Trump has stated that there are no Americans among the victims, but has indicated that some US soldiers ended up with injuries. General Dan Caine confirmed that one of the helicopters was hit but remained airworthy and all of the US aircraft returned safely.

The White House chief also said that "many" Cubans who were involved in protecting Maduro died in the operation. In an interview with the New York Post, he added that Cuba had long relied on Venezuelan support, but "in this case, it didn't work very well."

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Cuban government should start worrying.
