Denmark warns US: Greenland is not for sale
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has reacted strongly to repeated statements by US President Donald Trump about a possible takeover of Greenland.
Following the recent US military operation in Venezuela, she expressed concern that a similar scenario could occur in the case of this autonomous Danish territory. Frederiksen called on the US to end threats against an ally and respect the will of the Greenlanders, who have "made it clear that they are not for sale".
In an interview with The Atlantic, Trump called Greenland "essential to the defence of the USA". The appointment of Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy for Greenland has only reinforced the concerns of Copenhagen and Greenlandic officials.
The island's strategic location and abundant mineral resources make it attractive to US interests. Greenland has the right to independence, but is economically dependent on Denmark.
