Trump scraps US recommendation on daily alcohol intake, advises "drink less"

The administration of US President Donald Trump has published new dietary recommendations for 2025 to 2030, in which it abandons its previous recommendation to limit alcohol consumption to one or two drinks per day.

Instead of specific numbers, the government now recommends "drinking less," which it says is a more flexible approach to health. The measure is part of the "Make America Healthy Again" program overseen by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.

Critics, including non-profit groups, argue that the change could worsen public health by leaving the interpretation of moderation up to consumers.

The new guidelines also recommend more protein and less sugar, as well as avoiding processed foods. The change comes after disputes within the former administration over whether to introduce cancer warnings on alcohol labels.

However, according to the WHO, even small amounts of alcohol can increase health risks.
