Politico: Paris postponed the G7 summit for a UFC match at the White House
France has reportedly postponed this year's G7 summit to avoid a clash with the UFC mixed martial arts event, which will take place at the White House on June 14. The information was reported by Politico, citing two officials involved in the planning.
The G7 leaders' summit was originally scheduled to take place from June 14 to 16 in Évian-les-Bains on Lake Geneva. The new official date is June 15 to 17.
The date June 14 has multiple symbolic meanings in the US – it is Flag Day and also President Donald Trump's birthday. In October, he announced that he had planned a "big UFC fight" for that day on the South Lawn of the White House. According to UFC boss Dana White, five thousand people will attend the event.
The office of French President Emmanuel Macron has not commented on whether the change of date is directly related to this event, stating that the conference date is the result of consultations between G7 members.
The US Embassy in Paris did not respond to a request for comment.
